The wind rustled through the branches as Shayla and Anthony sat on a quiet park bench, their coffee cups slowly cooling in their hands. It was one of those early spring days where everything smelled like fresh beginnings—except the conversation teetering between them.

"You ever think about her?" Shayla asked, her tone casual, but her eyes sharp.

Anthony didn’t need to ask who she meant. He looked away, watching a little kid chase a runaway balloon.

"I do," he said finally. “But not the way I used to.”

Shayla nodded slowly, tapping her thumb against her cup. “Okay, but… if Amber took the divorce back—said it was a mistake, said she wanted to fix things—would you move on with her?”

The question hung between them like fog. Anthony didn’t answer right away. He took a breath, then another.

"I’d be lying if I said I haven’t imagined it," he admitted. “But those thoughts aren’t real anymore. They're just echoes. What we had… it broke. And even if she wanted it back, I don’t know if I could go back to who I was with her.”

“I’m asking because I need to know,” she said, softer now. “Not because I’m jealous. But because I care. And I don’t want to be a rebound you don’t admit is a rebound.”

Anthony turned to her, eyes meeting hers with a new kind of clarity.

“You’re not a rebound,” he said. “You’re the first time I’ve felt like I’m becoming someone better. Not because I’m trying to forget her—but because I’m starting to remember who I am without her.”

Shayla smiled faintly, as if something tense inside her had finally let go.

“Good,” she said. “Because I don’t want to be second choice. Not even to a memory.”
