Scene 1 – "The Storm Inside the House"

Setting: A dimly lit living room. Toys are scattered. A door slams offstage.

SFX: Loud arguing from the other room.

MOM (offstage, shouting):
You always twist everything! Don’t walk away from me, Chris!

DAD (offstage):
You’re drunk again, Sara! I’m done talking when you're like this!

LENA (sits center stage, clutching a stuffed animal, whispering):
Please stop… please… I’m right here.

Narrator (optional, spotlight):
In the war zone of love gone wrong, the casualties are often silent. This is Lena. Ten years old. A witness. A survivor. A child trying to hold the broken pieces of two people she calls "home."

Scene 2 – "Collateral Damage"

Mom storms in. Her mascara is smudged. She slams a glass on the table. Dad follows.

DAD:
Don’t start in front of her, Sara!

MOM (mocking):
Oh NOW you care about her? Where were you last week, huh?

LENA (quietly):
Please don’t fight…

MOM (to Lena, snapping):
Go to your room, baby. Mommy and Daddy are just talking.

LENA:
You’re not talking. You’re yelling.

DAD:
Let her speak. She sees it all anyway.

MOM (breaking down):
I’m trying, okay? I didn’t ask for this life either!

DAD (under his breath):
And yet, here we are.

LENA (soft, almost inaudible):
I just want it to be quiet.

Narrator:
Children hear what’s not said. Every slammed door becomes thunder. Every silence becomes fear.

Scene 3 – "Tipping Point"

Time skip. Lena sits alone, bruises on her emotions if not her skin. A knock on the door.

POLICE OFFICER/CPS WORKER:
We received a call. Is this the Matthews residence?

MOM (defensive):
What is this? Who called you?

DAD (guilty):
I did. I can’t let Lena grow up like this.

MOM (explodes):
You hypocrite! You’re just as bad! You’re tearing this family apart!

LENA (screaming):
STOP! Both of you!

(Silence falls. Everyone freezes. Lena’s voice breaks.)

LENA (crying):
I don’t care who’s right. I just want to feel safe again. I didn’t do anything…
(beat)
I didn’t deserve this.

Scene 4 – "Aftermath"

Setting: A sterile room. Lena sits with a counselor. Off to the side, Mom and Dad are in separate chairs, silent. No more shouting. Just shame.**

COUNSELOR (softly):
Lena, it’s okay to talk now. You’re safe.

LENA:
Will they stop fighting?

COUNSELOR:
They’re going to learn how. For you. And for themselves.

Narrator (final monologue):
When love turns toxic, it’s the innocent who bleed. Lena didn’t choose their war—but she lived every battle. And in the end, sometimes walking away is the only way to heal. Because love should never be louder than safety.

CURTAIN

Fade to black.
SFX: A heartbeat. Slow… steady… healing.
