THE BLOW-UP

INT. ANTHONY’S LIVING ROOM – EVENING

[Anthony is pacing. Maya sits on the couch, clearly drained. Kai plays silently in the corner with a tablet.]

ANTHONY:
You know what, Maya? I’m done. DONE. You said you’d help me, but I’ve been raising Kai by myself—with you just… lounging around!

MAYA:
(EXHAUSTED) Are you serious right now? I cook, I clean, I pick him up from school—he calls me MOM, Anthony.

ANTHONY:
Yeah, well maybe he shouldn't. Maybe you both should leave.

MAYA:
(SHOCKED) What??

ANTHONY:
Take your stuff. And take Kai too. Since you're so attached.

[Kai looks up, confused. Maya’s mouth drops open.]

PACKING UP

INT. BEDROOM – NIGHT

[Maya is tossing clothes into a duffel. Kai stands in the doorway with his little backpack.]

KAI:
Where are we going?

MAYA:
(SOFTLY) I don’t know, baby. Somewhere safe.

KAI:
Is Daddy coming?

MAYA:
(SWALLOWING TEARS) Not tonight.

FRIEND IN NEED

INT. TASHA’S APARTMENT – LATER THAT NIGHT

[Tasha opens the door in pajamas. Sees Maya with Kai. Gasps.]

TASHA:
Girl—what the hell happened??

MAYA:
He kicked me out. And told me to take Kai.

TASHA:
He what?! That man ain’t right. Come in, both of you. No kid deserves this kind of chaos.

[Kai yawns. Tasha hugs him gently.]

NEIGHBORHOOD GOSSIP

EXT. FRONT PORCH – THE NEXT MORNING

[Mrs. Delgado watches Anthony drink coffee alone. Judgmental glare on full blast.]

MRS. DELGADO:
So, you kicked her out… and the kid too?

ANTHONY:
(SHRUGS) She wasn’t his mom.

MRS. DELGADO:
She sure acted like it better than some real ones. Hope you like that empty house.

[She walks off, leaving Anthony alone with his guilt.]

UNEXPECTED TWIST

INT. FAMILY COURT MEDIATION – WEEKS LATER

[Maya sits across from Anthony, lawyer by her side. Kai sits drawing beside her.]

ANTHONY:
I—I messed up. I thought I could handle it. But… Kai needs you. I need you.

MAYA:
You don’t get to toss people like garbage and expect them back. But Kai? He deserves better. So I’m fighting for custody.

ANTHONY:
(WHISPERS) What?

LAWYER:
Maya has a strong case for de facto parenting. You gave her full responsibility. That has legal weight now.

 THE OUTCOME

INT. PARK – DAY

[Kai runs in the grass. Maya watches him, sipping iced tea. Tasha joins her.]

TASHA:
So it’s official?

MAYA:
Shared custody. But Kai stays with me during the school year. Anthony gets weekends… if he shows up.

TASHA:
Girl… you went from “girlfriend” to “full-blown mom with a lawyer.”

MAYA:
(SMILES) I didn’t plan for this life. But I’ll fight for that little boy like he’s my own—because he is.

FULL CIRCLE

EXT. SCHOOL PARKING LOT – MONTHS LATER

[Anthony watches as Kai runs to Maya, arms open. He hesitates, then walks over.]

ANTHONY:
Thank you… for not walking away from him.

MAYA:
I walked away from you. Not him. Don’t get it twisted.

[Anthony nods, silently accepting it. Maya hugs Kai tight. They walk off, hand in hand.]
