It was a humid Saturday evening in Atlanta, and the tension in the air was thick enough to cut with a knife. Shayla stood barefoot in the small kitchen of the apartment, preparing Kai's favorite spaghetti as the little boy colored pictures on the living room floor. Things had been quiet lately—too quiet. Ever since Anthony started staying over at Amber’s place more often, Shayla had felt a storm coming.

Suddenly, a knock echoed at the door. Shayla wiped her hands on a towel and peeked through the peephole.

It was Anthony.

With a sigh, she opened the door. He stepped in, dressed in all black with a serious expression, his jaw clenched tight.

"We need to talk," he said flatly, not even greeting Kai.

Shayla crossed her arms. "Then talk. What’s going on now, Anthony?"

Anthony looked around the apartment, his eyes settling on a bag by the door—a bag he hadn’t seen before. "You're packing?"

"Just some laundry for my mama's house. Why?"

He took a deep breath. "Because I came here to tell you... I want you and Kai to leave this apartment."

The words hit Shayla like a slap in the face.

"Excuse me?" she blinked, stunned. "You want me to leave? You serious right now?"

"Yeah. I talked to the landlord. I’ve already started the process to remove you from the lease. You’ve got 30 days."

Kai looked up from the floor, sensing something was wrong. "Mommy?"

Shayla’s voice cracked, but she forced herself to stay strong in front of her son. "Why are you doing this, Anthony? After everything—after all the mess you made—now you’re kicking us out?"

Anthony shifted uncomfortably. "It’s not like that. I’ve made a decision. I’m moving forward—with Amber. I need this apartment for myself. And... you’re not part of that future."

"So you're choosing Amber over your own son?" she snapped. "Over Kai?"

He hesitated. "Amber’s place is temporary. She’s letting me stay there till I get this one back."

"Wow," Shayla laughed bitterly, pacing the room. "You slept on my couch when you had nothing. I fed you when Amber left you. Now you want to throw me and your son into the street like trash?"

"I’ll help you find somewhere to go," he said, trying to sound reasonable. "I’ll even help with a deposit if you need it."

Shayla’s voice rose. "You think it’s about money? It's about respect! You don’t get to walk back into our lives and play landlord!"

Kai started crying, confused and afraid. Shayla immediately bent down to comfort him. "It’s okay, baby. Mommy’s here."

Anthony looked at the scene before him—Shayla kneeling beside their son, her eyes filled with anger and pain—and for a moment, doubt flickered across his face.

"You think she’s gonna be okay with this?" Shayla asked coldly, standing back up. "You think Amber won’t be the next one you throw away when you’re bored?"

Anthony didn’t respond.

"I’m not going anywhere," Shayla declared. "Not until I’ve talked to a lawyer. You don’t get to evict the mother of your child just because Amber made you feel brand new."

She walked to the door and opened it wide.

"If you’re done talking, you can go."

Anthony lingered in the doorway, torn between pride and regret.

"You always make things harder than they have to be," he muttered before stepping out.

Shayla closed the door and locked it tight. As Kai snuggled into her side, she whispered in his ear:

"We’re not leaving. Not like this. Not ever on his terms."

Outside in the hallway, Anthony paused, staring at the apartment door—his past on one side, and whatever future he was chasing on the other.
