"The Case of Compassion"

Characters:

  • Bethany – A hopeful, yet struggling woman seeking legal help

  • Natasha – A seasoned, no-nonsense attorney with a guarded heart

  • Jamal – Bethany’s supportive friend

  • Receptionist (Kelly) – Natasha’s assistant

  • Judge Ellis – A symbolic presence in Bethany’s dream sequence

Natasha's Law Office

(Bethany and Jamal walk into the sleek law office. Tension is thick. Bethany clutches a manila folder nervously.)

Kelly (Receptionist):
Hi there. You must be Bethany. Ms. Natasha is expecting you. Please, go right in.

(Bethany nods. Jamal gives her an encouraging look. She enters Natasha’s office.)

Natasha’s Office

(Natasha sits behind a large desk, reading a document. She doesn’t look up right away.)

Natasha:
Have a seat.
(Glances up, cool and professional.)
So, tell me... why should I take your case?

Bethany (softly):
I’m being evicted... unfairly. I’ve lived in that apartment for nine years. My landlord raised the rent illegally and I—

Natasha (interrupting):
I’ve heard it before. What makes your situation different from the dozens I turn away each week?

(Bethany opens the folder, sliding papers across the desk. Rent receipts, photos of mold, notices, and letters.)

Bethany:
Because I have proof. And nowhere else to go.

Natasha (reviews documents, then frowns):
This is compelling... but not a guaranteed win. I’m not in the business of losing.

Bethany (firmly):
I’m not asking you to gamble. I’m asking you to stand up for what’s right.

Outside the Office – Later

(Bethany and Jamal sit on a bench outside. She’s visibly shaken.)

Bethany:
She’s not going to take it. I saw it in her eyes.

Jamal:
Or maybe she’s just testing your fight. People like her don’t move for weakness. They move for fire.

Dream Sequence – Courtroom

(Bethany dreams that night. A surreal courtroom with Judge Ellis presiding. Natasha is nowhere in sight. Bethany stands alone at the defense table.)

Judge Ellis:
Bethany, do you believe you deserve justice?

Bethany (confused):
I... I think I do.

Judge Ellis:
Think or know?

Bethany (finding her strength):
I know I do.

Judge Ellis (smiling):
Then act like it. Justice isn’t given. It’s demanded.

Back at Natasha’s Office – Next Morning

(Bethany storms in. Kelly jumps slightly.)

Bethany:
I need five minutes with Natasha. No appointment.

(Kelly hesitates, but sees the fire in Bethany’s eyes and nods her through.)

Bethany (entering Natasha’s office):
I’m not leaving until you tell me no to my face. And if you do, I’ll represent myself. I’ll study the law, stand in that courtroom, and defend my right to live with dignity. Because I don’t have the luxury of walking away.

(Natasha stares at her, surprised. Then slowly, a smirk.)

Natasha:
Sit down, Bethany. Let’s win this.
