It was a Thursday evening, and the air buzzed with summer heat and low-key tension. Shayla paced the floor of her apartment, clutching her phone like it was a ticking bomb. She had rehearsed the words a dozen times but still couldn’t find the perfect way to say them.

“Just tell her,” she whispered to herself.
But this wasn’t just news—it was life-altering.

Finally, she hit send.
“Come over. Need to talk. Urgent.”

Within 20 minutes, Candace was at her door, iced coffee in hand, her sunglasses still on, full of curiosity.

“Girl, what’s going on? You okay? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

Shayla opened the door wider and stepped aside silently.

Candace walked in, scanning the apartment for signs of chaos—no broken dishes, no signs of a breakup, no emergency. Just Shayla, sweating bullets.

“Sit down,” Shayla said.
“You’re scaring me,” Candace replied, half-laughing, half-nervous.

Shayla took a deep breath, sat on the edge of the couch, and looked her best friend straight in the eyes.

“Candace… I’m pregnant.”

Candace blinked.
Once.
Twice.
Then her mouth dropped open.
“Wait… what?!”
She didn’t even realize she was still holding the iced coffee until it started dripping condensation onto the rug.

Shayla nodded slowly. “Six weeks. I just found out.”

A hundred questions flooded Candace’s mind.
Who’s the father? Were you trying? Are you okay? What are you gonna do? Why didn’t you tell me sooner?

But instead of blurting them all out, she reached forward and grabbed Shayla’s hand.

“Are you okay?” she asked.

Shayla’s eyes filled with tears. “I don’t know.”
She looked vulnerable in a way Candace had never seen before. “It wasn’t planned. It’s… it’s Jordan’s.”

Jordan. The on-and-off ex Shayla had broken up with for good—or so Candace had thought—two months ago.

“You saw him again?”

Shayla nodded. “Just once. I thought it was closure. But now it’s… this.”

Candace leaned back, processing the shock, but slowly, her expression softened.
“Okay. Okay. First of all, we’re going to figure this out. Second—do your parents know?”

Shayla shook her head. “Only you. You’re the first person I’ve told.”

Candace exhaled deeply and finally smiled, pulling her friend into a hug.

“Well then, I guess I’m going to be the best damn Auntie Candace this baby’s ever seen.”

Shayla laughed through her tears, the tension melting. It wasn’t going to be easy. There were still a million unknowns ahead. But in that moment, surrounded by the warmth of unconditional friendship, she didn’t feel so alone anymore.
